Keeping it cozy

Fireplace

You'll find that the place is very cozy once you get a fire started. Follow these steps to have a pleasant fire experience and stay warm:

Wood and some firestarters are provided. It is highly advised to purchase some firestarters and kindling before you arrive.

Kindling is essential the fire will not start easily without kindling

  • The chute is always open. No need to open any chute but you do need to have the bottom left plume lever pulled all the way out to let in as much air as possible.
  • Make sure bottom left flume pull lever is completely out and stack 5-6 pieces kindling on top of a firestarter in the fireplace.
  • Make sure to stack the kindling over the firestarter in a pyramid/teepee fashion so air can get through
  • Light the firestarter and leave the door cracked to let in air.
  • NOTE: Some smoke may briefly enter house for a minute or two as it pushes up the cold air. If this happens open some windows and the front door to keep it aired out until it stops and the smoke clears.
  • Continue to add small to large pieces of wood once you the kindling is on fire, while continuing to leave the door cracked open
  • When you have enough coals going after about an hour or two then you can close the door and turn on the vents at the bottom of the fireplace
  • The vent fans will push out hot air into the living room. Turn them on with the bottom left switches there is a high and low setting.
  • At this point when you have enough coals you can also push in the bottom left plume lever a bit like halfway to choke the air and the fire will burn slower. If you see the fire dying after pushing the plume lever in then you went too far, pull it back out a bit.

FIRE IS HOT, use the provided mitt in the top basket when opening and closing the fireplace. If you have children please use the fold out plastic gate and put it around the fireplace to keep kids out.

Upstairs Heaters

  • The upstairs bedrooms have great insulation so all you need is a space heater to keep warm even on the coldest nights.
  • Note, it will get really hot in the room above the fireplace if you burn a fire for long. If this happens crack a window for a while before going to sleep.
  • The space heaters are all you need, simply plug one in each room and keep it on LOW seriously low or it will get too hot overnight and be uncomfortable.

Please keep the heaters on the lowest power setting otherwise you will blow a fuse if both heaters are on the highest heat setting. If this happens the fuse box is located to the left of the front door. Simply open it and flip the fuse that is closed.
